Calina Ciobanu

I am an educator, writer, writing coach, and college essay consultant based in Los Angeles.  I received my bachelor’s degree from Harvard and an M.Phil from the University of Cambridge, and I hold a Ph.D. in English with a certificate in Feminist Studies from Duke University. As a professor, I taught literature and writing at Duke, Emerson College, and the United States Naval Academy, and my academic research drew on feminist theory, postcolonial studies, and human-animal studies in order to examine forms of disposable life within the contemporary Anglophone novel. More broadly, my writing explores issues of gender, species, and power, and has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the minnesota review, Modern Fiction Studies, MAKE, and most recently, Hypertext.

As a writing coach and college essay consultant, I work with students at all stages of their academic journeys, specializing in college admissions essays and graduate school personal statements.  Whether I am working with high school seniors striving to get into their dream colleges or with law, business, and medical school applicants carving a path toward their future careers, I am passionate about helping each of my students craft a compelling story in their own authentic voice, a story that they deliver with clarity and conviction. Students I have worked with have been admitted to competitive colleges and universities, including Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Rice, NYU, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon; most importantly, they have landed in institutions of higher education that are good fits for them.
